Many cyclists use the Greenwich foot tunnel to get across the river. The next bridge up river is Tower Bridge which is quite a trek. The tunnel is currently being refurbished and, according to Greenwich Council, the tunnel “will remain open for the majority of the refurbishment work”. Not true.
I needed to use it last night to get to an urgent appointment at Canary Wharf and upon arriving at the south end of the tunnel, the steel door was padlocked shut with no explanation. This is the second time that I have been unable to use it in recent weeks.
If you use the foot tunnel as a cyclist, I would recommend that you assume that it is closed until this work is completed. You can’t rely on it being open and perhaps like me, once you get to the tunnel and discover it is closed, it’s very frustrating.
